A major topic in previous conferences (particularly the Kruger Park (2001) and Grainau (1997) was the issue of standards and guidelines for conducting personal and household travel surveys. Over the past several years, there have been a variety of standards that have been promulgated around the world both in travel surveys and in marketing surveys in general. Within the United States, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program has sponsored in depth research into the development of a number of suggested standards and guidelines for conducting personal and household travel surveys. The intent of the workshops for this part of the conference is to review and discuss the standards, guidelines and recommendations that have been made to date in the following areas:
- Instrument Design
- Data Collection Procedures
- Sample Design
- Pilot Surveys and Pretests
- Survey Implementation
- Data Coding
- Data Analysis
We hope to determine the applicability of the various standards in a global context, and develop modifications and identify research needs that will provide the foundation for global standards on travel surveys. In addition, the conference is expected to lead to identification of those areas for standards that must necessarily be country or culture specific.
